This video seems to be implying that Y-chromosome Adam was the partner of Mitochondrial Eve. This is an improbable (and potentially dangerous) suggestion to make. While there is evidence from mitochondria that all modern humans are descended from a single female ancestor, and evidence from Y-chromosomes that we are all descended from a single male ancestor, there is no evidence that these two individuals ever met, or indeed, that their lifetimes coincided. See River Out of Eden by Richard Dawkins for more on this; our best guess is that Y-chromosome Adam lived at least several thousand years after Mitochondrial Eve (and neither of them need to have been particularly prolific breeders, they were just ordinary individuals whose descendants happen to include everyone currently alive). To suggest otherwise tends to play into the hands of creationists, who would very much like Mitochondial Eve and Y-chromosome Adam to have lived together at the same time.

Whilst I think it's pretty clear that Jeremy Rifkin himself does not put the two together as partners, the animators (for what looks to be a light, comedic effect) have chosen to represent the two standing together as partners and parents for illustrative purposes. I don't think this is going to bolster the creationists' cause – it is simply a humorous, pared down depiction of a complex point.

As to the 'dangerous' espousal of creationism, I think it's reasonably clear Rifkin's intention is to provide a passing example of shared ancestors in an attempt to foster some kind of global commonality and empathy – not to support the creationists' claims!

Love the idea, and the art behind it. You guys are great, keep doing what your doing, and hopefully more people will see these videos you guys make and try to live by them. Even try to contribute in some way in our own lives to make this world actually possible.

Sure miss watching Andrew Park draw in person. Great to discover these!

    Fantastic video!

In fact, I've read that Adam was 250k years ago and Eve was 50k years ago, so not only did they not meet, they may not even have been able to conceive if they had.

In his thoughts on religious consciousness (if I may call it that) Mr. Rifkin seems to have forgotten 700 years or so of life in Al Andalus.

competition and limited understanding, its a matter of how they understood to make this world a better place.how would you?i took up music and used my time beautifully and peacefully.but as long as greed will be in the hearts of people this world will continue in its downward spiral towards destruction meaning we humans the world…

Imagine – John Lennon 1971. Jeremy Rifkin is in good company. Great animating as usual.

does anyone know if we could get the FULL board of illustrations from this animated essay (or any other from RSA animated) on a giant poster (for sale on the internet)?
I 'm sure a lot of people would pay actual money for this highly intelligent and humorous way to get such an inspiring and mind-broadening story across.. to display in work spaces or at home, or at seminars, or.. this could really become something big, believe me

  • Abi Stephenson

Thanks for your suggestion Roel! We have had a lot of queries about posters/prints of our RSAnimates, and I've mentioned the growing demand to Cognitive Media. The fabulous animators are now looking into the possibility of producing a number of these. But as they are a small team, we'll have to give them a little time to set this up. Do check out their website http://www.cognitivemedia.co.uk and drop them a line to show interest…

thank you. I have been talking about this need for human growth for a long time. You have done a beautiful job of illustrating these beliefs.

Having just watched the 10 minute animated version I'm now going to invest the 51:45 minutes to watch the entire video. I've been researching this topic and related issues for the past few weeks (more here: http://simbeckhampson.amplify.com/) and the analysis really, I mean really, resonates. I feel so fortunate to have listened to this information and feel that it helps explain so much of why we are, why we feel, where we came from, where we are heading and how we can begin to support one another to make this world a better place; it also clearly gives technology, once managed and used with better understanding and discipline, a real place in the future of an emphatic society. Thank you Mr Rifkin – Brilliant! (Thanks also to the RSA & Cognitive Media :-)

  • Cherie Sprosty

Brilliant! Your observations are borne out on the New York City subway every day. A side note: the talented Andrew Park would make the illustrations even better if most of the human figures were not just male. Though most likely not intentional, the omission of female figures gives an underlying impression that women are secondary; Mitochondrial Eve notwithstanding. Thank you for your creative and illuminating work.

Empathetic extension is an interesting topic, it seems to me there is a curious dynamic and interplay though between tribalism, theological consciousness and the nation state. For example, the identity of a secular state may negate the theological consciousness or indeed it may amplify such in ‘minority communities’. The ‘empathic embrace’ created by Social Media is clearly a very interesting phenomenon and extends that which we have understood to be generated through traditional media.

Empathic Civilisation is a pie in the sky dream. Not when there are groups that went back in time and think that religious ties should have been the way to go. An altruistic notion is all this is going to be.

fascinating! thanks for taking the time to illustrate this and spread the word. reminded me of a radio lab broadcast i heard a few years ago and glad to have the opportunity to ponder the broader application and impact of empathy. http://www.wnyc.org/shows/radiolab/episodes/200…

How can I listen to an empathetic discussion and not welcome what the RSA as well as Cognitive Media has done here. This is distributed energy in working practice and though we have a long way to go before it has direct impacts to the biosphere and transmutation towards 21st Century thinking, it is one of those small steps that add up to move us all globally forward.

But decendants of Adam may have conceived with decendants of Eve “creating” this model.
Also, creationist usually fall within a camp that takes Biblical scripture literally. They often believe that a humanoid being “created” the universe. There are some who study Kabbalah at a higher level that know that that isn't what creation is.

Also, those that have the privilage of learning from the writings of Rabbi Yehuda Halevi Ashlag – and can study even the basic ideas of Kabbalah through this late and great individual – will notice the sameness of this information from Jeremy Rifkin. What is astonishing is that Rav Ashlag didn't have MRI data nor the discovery of DNA at the time that he wrote down his thoughts.

This is probably the most beautiful, intelligent and enlightning piece of visual art I have ever seen in the 62 years of my life. As an old hippie, it brought tears in my eyes. Thank you so much!

Great animation and nice overall reasoning.
However, from a neuroscientific point of view there are some major errors about the discovery and function of mirror neurons in monkeys and, more importantly, in humans in the talk.
In monkeys they do seem to exist – as is known from single-cell recordings conducted mainly in the Parma lab. MRI scans in humans, however, show mixed results and their existence is not unequivocally proven. As intuitive as their characteristics and functions are, their significance shouldn't be over-interpreted.

I am glad the Arts have come to their senses. Empathy and empathic living is most rewarding. I daresay the science fiction of late has even reflected this zeitgeist, not to mention the fiction we all live moment by moment.
I am curious as to what he means by “Annihilate time and space”? Is that a linguistic reference or a physical one? If it is linguistic, I suspect he means something like, “like sand in an hourglass, so too are the days of our lives”,
our lives a flake of nano-fiche floating on depths of time and space unimaginable, while if the statement is physical, morally speaking something like this, “The operator states $|Psi_{Biosphere}rangle = sum_{#} e^{empathic connections among all+ lambda (humans-1)} $ on the physical vacuum lives on planet earth and is about to make a huge choice, which will determine the oscillation spectra of utmost creation”. They are not mutually exclusive, yet the use of such strong language in a world of Verbo Caro Factum Est is rather edgy.

Blood, religious and nationalistic ties all have a property in common: the other. A group is defined not only by what is included equally what is excluded. The empathetic socio-evolutionary step described in this video is missing this essential component; if everything is in an individual’s empathetic group, then nothing is.

Nonetheless it seems there is a shift in empathetic relations beyond the traditional ties of blood, religion and nationalism. Consider the evidence presented in this video, the world-wide response to catastrophic events such as the Japanese earthquake. The world knows about these events because our global communication network allows it. Similarly, I would posit that the range of empathetic relations under blood, religious and nationalistic ties is strongly related to the inter-connectivity permitted under the available communication mediums. Therefore, the advent of global communication _has_ ushered in a new empathetic paradigm, and we see the effects of it daily. Without a further leap in communication, another shift in empathetic range seems unlikely.
